'Fluidity & Form'
charcoal & graphite drawing
114cm x 114cm. 2024
The relationship between the fluid, tireless sea and the form of the coastline completely intrigues me. We had a lot of storms this Spring and the sea was incredibly powerful. This composition is worked from above the plunge pool on Cliff beach. Because the plunge pool is a deep circular rock pool, when the high tide has a lot of force and it hits this section of rock, a powerful circular swell is generated which then forces these incredible swirling rhythms out across the bay. You can see from the ferocious activity of the seas surface, how the impact of the rocks below the surface are influencing the movement of the sea.

With Fluidity & Form I talked about the power and fascinating relentless energy of the sea against the coastline. As I was working on that large drawing and walking out to observe the seas activity that month, I was so stunned by the range and of colours and hues with the low changing light of February into March, that I had to paint this composition as well. I am fascinated at locating areas of the coastline where it is evident that the movement of the sea over thousands of years, has persistently etched that same movement into the rock formation, as you can see in the lower edge of this painting. Nature is so beautiful.
