Oil painting on hand made Indian Khadi paper.  2024-25

This painting is worked from with in the very centre of the rock-pools at Cliff Beach. Dependant on the height of the sands, which alters regularly with each tide, you can occasionally climb into this magical space. The sand, water and light are so clean, the brightness sparkles from beneath your paddling feet.

One million, 760 thousand Sunsets,72.jpg

The Calanais Standing Stones are uniquely special to the Isle of Lewis' identity.

'The 5000 year old site is a cruciform shaped stone circle that has weathered the storms of the Outer Hebrides and today serves as a vivid reminder of the rich archaeological heritage. Mystery surrounds its exact purpose, although much of the evidence indicates that these megaliths were the site of both an astronomical observatory and ritual activity.'
Quoted from Calanais.org

I have stayed away from working from them for a long time, but every time I visit, I find the surface of the rocks with the Gneiss rock rhythms and the masses of crusty lichen growth. This year I have approached them, focusing on the rich textures, considering their age and the positions of the stones relationship to each other. The way the small groupings have weathered and eroded together, how specific lichens are growing on the same directional surfaces. The sense of the stones as an ancient community that have developed together over a considerable amount of time.

The title is long but found from how many days there are in 5000 years. One million, 760 thousand days, sunsets, is a mind popping amount of time.

With this composition, I want the viewer to engage with the surfaces of the stones, feel those tactile urges but restrain yourselves as touching is not allowed. Feel the strength of the wind and sense the time and endurance of this special place, Calanais.

This year has seen a change with my ceramic work. These works are influenced from the drawings that I have made from Calanais.

The image on the right and below are from an exhibition of my ceramics with the abstract paintings of my husband, David Knight. 'Sonorous Coastline' is held at the new Arts & Culture centre in Uig, Dusgaidh, Baile na Cille, which we are very lucky to have on the island. It is an old church that has been empty for many years, the space is large and open and holds an incredible sense of calm that lends itself sympathetically to contemplating the Art exhibitions held there.

moon jars BnC 72.jpg

The Moon Jars are concerned with gravity. A Moon jar itself is a traditional ceramic shape originating from Korea. I want to project the relationship between the moon and the sea, the push and pull rhythms and fluid colour ways.

All of the ceramics are hand built by coiling around the fishing buoys found on the beach at Cliff. Working in this way is quite random and forces me to accept the unpredictable that occurs with the ceramic building and glazing processes. Each piece is individual.
